The design of Parish Church of St. Joseph<\/strong> is a masterpiece of modern architecture and Critical Regionalism<\/strong>, designed by the renowned Maltese architect Richard England<\/strong> in 1962. Situated in the small rural village of Manikata<\/strong>its construction took place between 1964 and 1974<\/strong>. This temple represents a radical break from traditional Baroque dome designs, becoming an icon of religious avant-garde in the Mediterranean and the first major commission of England's career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Fusion of the Sacred and the Rural<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Church of St. Joseph in Manikata represents an abstract interpretation of the “girna”<\/strong>, the traditional stone hut used by Maltese farmers in the countryside. Richard England\u2019s concept sought to capture human spirituality in harmony with the natural environment and the peace of the rural setting.
