The parish church of Hamrun was built between 1869 and 1875, according to the plans of Maltese architect George Schinas (1834-1894). In 1895, a chapel was added, while its magnificent dome was completed in 1955, based on a design by Maltese architect Andrea Vassallo (1856-1928), inspired by that of Santa Maria della Salute in Venice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Aesthetic Fusion of Eclecticism and Devotion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The architecture of this temple stands out for its fa\u00e7ade, a masterpiece by Schinas that boldly fuses French Gothic with Venetian Baroque, reflecting the Romantic movement of British architecture in Malta. Its structure consists of three naves with a central axis projected outward, resembling the frontispiece of a grand temple. Crowning the building is its magnificent dome, designed by Andrea Vassallo in the 1920s and considered the best on the island. This work, executed under the direction of Guz\u00e8 D\u2019Amato, successfully integrates medieval and classical elements, rising majestically above the urban surroundings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside, the main nave is connected to the side naves by high arched openings decorated with Corinthian columns. The lighting of the presbytery comes from the double windows located in the octagonal sections of the drum of the dome. The choir features an apse wall that originally housed a work by Ramiro Cal\u00ec, which was replaced in 1965 by a painting by Emvin Cremona. Meanwhile, the titular painting of Saint Cajetan was created in 1882 by the Italian Pietro Gagliardi, following the sober style of the Nazarene movement. The work depicts the mystical vision of the saint receiving the Infant Jesus from the Virgin\u2019s hands, honoring the life of piety and charity of the founder of the Theatine Order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To preserve this historic stronghold, a conservation project co-financed by the European Union has been carried out. The interventions focused on mitigating the deterioration of the masonry, wood, and metalwork caused by the elements and pollution. These actions ensure the structural integrity and aesthetic beauty of the building, guaranteeing its protection and enjoyment for the entire community in the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
